Sydney’s Daily Telegraph has a story about a citizen who used a mobile phone to film what happened after a man allegedly robbed a bank and took a bank employee hostage. A group of shoppers captured the alleged robber, and the mojo captured that event with a mobile phone.

Legal rights of mojos

David Earley has written a useful post about the legal rights of people who film or video in public. It follows my post about police seizure of a mojo’s work in Sydney on December 23.

Mojo on mojos

This short video from the excellent Voices of Africa project shows how the mojo concept has expanded in Africa. The first paragraph summaries the concept: “The Africa Interactive Media Foundation is convinced that mobile technologies will change the media landscape in Africa by offering more practical and more efficient reporting tools.”

This report of police confiscating a mojo’s mobile phone is a worry both for journalism and democracy. The citizen journalist, a well-known Australian businessman, filmed police with his Blackberry in public in Sydney’s Kings Cross. Two women officers apparently took the phone and deleted the video. If the story is true, and it appears it […]

Mojo course in Kuala Lumpur

Norazah Muhamad Azha talks on Qik about the course I ran today in Malaysia. Apologies for the background noise. She was going live to the web,  and we can hear my voice in the background. Norazah did well to ignore the distractions.

Visit this site for more information. Registered participants get a […]

Few mojos in Australia

Have been travelling a lot these past two weeks, staying at hotels that charge a fortune for Internet access. That’s my excuse for the lack of updates. I refuse to pay for a utility. It’s like charging people to take a shower or turn on a light. I found this piece about the use of […]

Ifra asked me to write a special report about mojos. I’ve just finished the draft. It’s about 13,000 words. Will finish with some recommendations about the best tools: another 2,000 words. Have tested Qik, Bambuser, Flixwagon, Shozu and Kyte. Of these, I find Qik, Bambuser and Flixwagon the most relevant for reporting breaking news. My […]

Communications policy paper

Spent Monday and Tuesday this week at the annual communications policy and research forum in Sydney. Also visited the office of the Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers’ Association where I spoke with Panpa CEO Mark Hollands. Here is a mojo interview with him.

I have been busy this week working as a mojo for the Geelong Advertiser, my local paper. Here is a photograph of me in action, using my Nokia N95 8Gb.
